Home improvement vs. moving house: weighing up your options

Over the past few months, we’ve spent more time at home than we probably ever have before. Staring at the same four walls may have us questioning our interior choices (was duck egg blue really the right choice for the kitchen?), or even have us thinking of moving house.

As many of us aren’t holidaying as much as usual, or may not be venturing into the office daily at the moment, having a comfortable living and working environment that you’re happy to call home feels all the more essential.

However, neither home improvements nor moving house are cheap. So whether you’re brightening up your bedroom, sprucing up the spare room or thinking of moving houses altogether, it’s important to plan ahead and set a budget to ensure you’re as prepared as possible.

We’ve listed some tips below to think through, depending on the type of change you’re considering.

There’s no place like home

If you’re happy in your current home, but want to potentially add value to the property or give your place an upgrade, then home improvements could be the solution. Below we’ve listed three ways to improve your home: upgrading existing furniture, creating new space and sprucing up the exterior.

Out with the old, in with the…old?

Small changes can potentially make a big difference to your home. It doesn’t necessarily have to mean replacing furniture. It can be as simple as upgrading it. Upcycling is a great way of renewing your interior and adding a personal touch to your home.

Often, we have things in our home that have sentimental value but are a bit tired and out-dated, so upcycling could be a great way to revamp these items without getting rid of them altogether. This could involve painting a mirror or upholstering a chair – small tweaks to existing décor can give you the refresh you’re looking for.

Making space

Adding rooms and new spaces may be ways to help increase a property’s value. Combining two rooms into one large one or adding or updating a bathroom might be things to think about if you want to increase the overall value of your house, while also adding practicality and more room for growing families.

But it’s important to consider the associated costs with adding new rooms or extensions. Everything from soil type to size can have an impact on the price.

The same goes for adding bathrooms. The cost will depend on size, overall design, what you actually want (e.g. toilet, shower, bath) etc. so it’s worth mapping out your needs and putting together a budget for each item.

It’s a good idea to get multiple quotes for any improvements you plan to make to your home so you can make an informed, cost-effective decision.

First impressions count

Making sure that the outside of your home is neat and tidy can have a powerful first impression, and a positive knock-on effect for both visitors and residents. Things like mowing the front lawn, painting the fence and brickwork, or cleaning the outside windows can all make a big difference to your home and give it a fresh lease of life.

Whether you’re planning on making small tweaks or a big refurbishment, remember to budget appropriately and plan well in advance.
